The Japanese Wood Paper Gift Set for Nature Lovers brings together four pieces of stationery made from Kyogi, paper-thin sheets of real wood shaved from Japanese red pine grown in the Ina Valley of Nagano. It is a gift for someone who loves nature and often spends time in the mountains, in the forest, or anywhere surrounded by trees.

If the person you have in mind spends weekends hiking, camping, or simply walking under trees, this set lets them bring a little of that feeling home. Every sheet shows its own wood grain and carries a light, natural scent of pine, so sitting down to write at the desk feels a little like being back in the woods. It is a quiet way to slow down and relax at the end of the day.

The four pieces cover everyday writing from start to finish: a 100-page A6 notebook for a journal or a record of trips, an 80-sheet memo pad for small notes, 20 sheets of loose leaf paper for longer letters or sketches, and 10 message cards, three with a bear, three with a ptarmigan, and four left plain. The recipient can keep notes of their own outdoor days and still have cards ready to write to someone else. Every set arrives wrapped in its own red furoshiki, a Japanese wrapping cloth, together with a printed holiday greeting card, so it is ready to give.

The wood has a story worth passing on. In the Ina Valley, many red pines are being lost to pine wilt disease, and infected trees are difficult to use as lumber. Yamatowa harvests these red pines before they die and shaves them into Kyogi, giving the wood a second life and putting local timber back into daily use to support the care of the forest. Kyogi itself has a long history in Japan: more than 1,500 years ago, when paper was rare, monks wrote sutras on thin sheets of wood.

Why It Makes a Good Gift

  • Why it is good: every sheet is shaved from real Japanese red pine, so each one has its own grain and a light pine scent. These are also the four Red Pine pieces our customers most often buy together.
  • How it is good: the four pieces cover everyday writing, from a journal to small notes and message cards. A pencil or ballpoint pen works best on wood.
  • Why it works as a gift: it is unusual enough to surprise someone who loves nature, and practical enough to use every day. It arrives wrapped in a red furoshiki with a holiday card.

The Story of Shiki bun

Shiki bun is the stationery line of Yamatowa, a company in the Ina Valley of Nagano that works to bring people and forests closer again. As lifestyles changed, many Japanese forests were left untended, and overgrown branches now block the sunlight that keeps a forest healthy. Yamatowa believes that using Japanese wood in daily life is one way to look after these forests, and its woodworkers turn local red pine into notebooks, cards, and other everyday goods.
