Wooden Sheet Memo Pad

Sale price$18.00 USD

The Wooden Sheet Memo Pad is crafted from ultra-thinly shaved wood, known as “Kyogi” (経木) in Japan. It brings the warmth and texture of nature to your daily writing. Each sheet reveals natural wood grain and releases a gentle, calming aroma, creating a sensory experience every time you write.

Kyogi has a long history in Japan. Over 1,500 years ago, when Buddhism was introduced, paper was a rare luxury. Monks often wrote sutras on thin wood sheets as part of their spiritual practice. Though ancient tools couldn't shave wood as finely, Japanese artisans have since refined the technique. Their skill has led to the creation of this beautiful and functional memo pad.

Because it’s made of 100% wood, some inks may bleed or transfer. For the best writing experience, we recommend using a pencil or ballpoint pen. You can also enjoy sketching with colored pencils or simply embrace the natural ink bleed as part of the wood’s unique charm.

As with all natural materials, the wooden sheets may warp slightly or change color over time, adding to their character. This memo pad is not just a functional item, but a piece of Japanese stationery art that brings the beauty and fragrance of nature to your workspace.

Coexistence with the Forest of Shiki Bun

In the Ina Valley, located in Nagano Prefecture in Japan, a company called Yamatowa supports coexistence with forests. Once, people were closely involved with forests and received many blessings from them. However, as lifestyles changed and forests were left untended, overgrown and dark forests increased. Untrimmed branches and leaves block sunlight, damaging the health and ecosystem of the forest.

Yamatowa believes that although it's difficult to return to the old ways of living, it's possible to bring living closer to forests again and increase the number of healthy and bright forests that are well-maintained, as in the past. They think that using Japanese wood appropriately in daily life will lead to forest conservation, and with this in mind, they launched a brand called Shiki.

To realize their vision, they use Akamatsu pine from the Ina Valley, and skilled woodworkers create products including notebooks and other wooden products.
