Edo Tokyo Goshuincho Stamp Book – Slate Blue

The Edo Tokyo Goshuincho Stamp Book in Slate Blue is an accordion-fold goshuincho from Shogado, a Kyoto maker of yuzen washi stationery, with a cover that gathers the landmarks and small pleasures of Tokyo: Tokyo Tower, the Kaminarimon gate of Senso-ji with its giant red lantern, plates of Edo-style sushi and other pieces of the city, scattered across the paper like a map of a good day out.

Shogado calls the series Edo-zukushi, roughly "all things Edo", and names the three colorways with three characters for beauty. This one is Iki, the Edo ideal of understated chic, the beauty of holding back. The palette is kept restrained: a slate-blue ground with the motifs in white, gray, gold and small touches of red.

Goshuincho are the books that temples and shrines stamp and inscribe when you visit, and this one keeps the traditional form. The pages are hosho, the thick, soft white washi used for goshuin, bound accordion-style in 11 folds so that both sides can be used, 44 pages in all. The cover is yuzen washi, hand-dyed one sheet at a time in Kyoto. Title label stickers are included, so you can name the book on the cover, Temple Visits in Japan, say, or the year of the trip.

It also works as a book for station and sightseeing stamps, as a small travel journal, or as a sketchbook. The hosho pages take pencil, colored pencil and light watercolor well, and the accordion binding opens completely flat.
