Gion Kyoto Goshuincho Stamp Book – Gold
The Gion Kyoto Goshuincho Stamp Book in Gold is an accordion-fold goshuincho from Shogado, a Kyoto maker of yuzen washi stationery. Its cover is printed with the festival floats, folding fans and paper lanterns of Gion Matsuri, the month-long summer festival of Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, and Shogado designed the pattern from scratch for this series. The series comes in three colorways named after the hours of the festival.
This one is Ake, written with the character for daybreak. It is the daytime festival: a warm gold ground with the floats, fans and lanterns picked out in red, green, white and blue.
Goshuincho are the books that temples and shrines stamp and inscribe when you visit, and this one keeps the traditional form. The pages are hosho, the thick, soft white washi used for goshuin, bound accordion-style in 11 folds so that both sides can be used, 44 pages in all. The cover is yuzen washi, hand-dyed one sheet at a time in Kyoto, with gold, silver and fluorescent inks that catch the light. Title label stickers are included, so you can name the book on the cover, Temple Visits in Japan, say, or the year of the trip.
It also works as a book for station and sightseeing stamps, as a small travel journal, or as a sketchbook. The hosho pages take pencil, colored pencil and light watercolor well, and the accordion binding opens completely flat.
