Tomoegawa Tomoe River Writing Pad – A5

Sale price$33.00 USD

This A5 writing pad uses the original Tomoe River paper, manufactured by Tomoegawa in Japan. The 52 gsm sheets are remarkably lightweight yet provide a solid writing feel, with an exceptionally smooth surface that showcases fountain pen ink at its best. Sheen and shading appear vividly, while feathering is kept to a minimum—qualities that have made Tomoe River the global standard for fountain pen–friendly paper.

The paper used in this pad was purchased in bulk before Tomoegawa ceased production. Once this stock is gone, the original Tomoe River will no longer be available. Many still prefer Tomoegawa’s original version over the later Sanzen edition, making this pad especially recommended for those seeking the classic experience.

Each pad contains 200 plain A5 sheets, perfect for extended writing sessions without adding bulk. A sturdy, double-sided pencil board is included to guide your writing—one side with 12 mm ruling and the other with a 6 mm grid, suitable for letters, notes, and layout work.

Yamamoto Paper — Preserving the Joy of Paper for the Future

Based in Sakai, Osaka, Yamamoto Paper was founded in 1972 as a paper specialist. Drawing on decades of experience connecting paper manufacturers with end users, they now design and produce their own original stationery. At the heart of their work is a belief in “sharing the joy and warmth of paper with confidence for generations to come.”

Rather than simply selling beautiful paper, Yamamoto Paper values delivering the full character of each sheet—its writing feel, texture, and the way it changes over time. They are also known as “custodians” of paper culture, reviving legendary papers that have gone out of production and passing them on to the next generation.

What makes Yamamoto Paper especially beloved is their balance of craftsmanship and playfulness. Their Paper Tasting series, for example, lets you sample different types of paper as if you were tasting wine, turning the exploration of paper into a delightful experience. It’s this combination of uncompromising quality and creative spirit that has earned them loyal fans among stationery lovers and fountain pen enthusiasts around the world.

Best fountain pen friendly paper from Japan

"This is simply the best paper for fountain pen users, and the writing pad is a great way to use it. Very happy to still be able to purchase this paper, which is no longer produced in Japan - even though a newer Tomoe River paper version is available from Tomoegawa (manufacturered on a different machine, though). Great purchase and good service from Komorebi."

Ralph H. (5/5)

"A nice addition, smoother and a tad lighter than the renewed version. I enjoy the notepad as it can be easily flipped, written and torn out. Minimal ghosting and no bleeding when swatching my Ferris Wheel Press inks. Makes a lovely crinkly noise when inked."
