The Tatsuno Leather Pen Tray – Wide is a spacious, thoughtfully designed tray that brings a refined sense of calm to your desk. Ideal for organizing not only fountain pens but also ink bottles, seals, or small tools, it supports a focused and well-ordered writing environment.

Using the traditional Japanese leather-shaping technique known as kawa shibori, this tray is molded from a single piece of vegetable-tanned leather with a CNC-machined 3D mold. The seamless, sculptural form highlights the natural softness and structure of the leather, gently supporting your favorite writing tools.

The leather is Tatsuno leather, made in Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture, where the art of leather tanning has been passed down for over 400 years. This premium cowhide is vegetable-tanned using an unfinished method, preserving its original texture and subtle color variations. With use, it gradually develops a deeper tone and a beautiful patina.

Tatsuno’s mild Setouchi climate and the clean, mineral-rich waters of the Ibo River provide the ideal conditions for producing supple, expressive leather. Skilled local artisans hand-finish each hide using time-honored dyeing and tanning techniques, bringing out its unique character.

Discreet anti-slip pads are placed on the underside to help keep the tray stable. A perfect Japanese desk accessory for those who treasure their tools and enjoy creating a peaceful, intentional workspace.

Timeless Leather Artistry from Toyama, Japan

At the foot of Japan’s Northern Alps, in the peaceful town of Toyama, a designer and a former shoemaker husband-and-wife duo are quietly reshaping the future of leather craftsmanship. This is colmdesign—a brand where contemporary design meets time-honored technique.

Each piece is formed using a rare leather-molding process known as kawa shibori, which combines vegetable-tanned leather with 3D data modeling and CNC-machined molds. The result is a seamless fusion of digital precision and warm, organic texture—shaped not only by tools, but by hands that understand the soul of the material.

Their leather of choice is Tatsuno leather, sourced from Hyogo Prefecture—Japan’s renowned tanning region. Deeply committed to the beauty of aging, they choose this leather for its expressive grain, natural variation, and rich patina that grows more personal over time. Every tray is not just made, but evolved—over conversations with trusted tanners, through shaping by skilled hands, and with an eye for subtle imperfection.

While the husband brings his background in product and graphic design into development and communication, his wife—once a shoemaker in Osaka—handles each step of production with the steady expertise born from years of working with leather. Together, they build products they truly want to use themselves—uncompromising in form, function, and feel.

This pen tray, crafted from molded Tatsuno leather, is one of their signature pieces. Minimalist yet tactile, structured yet alive—it invites you to pause, write, and appreciate the quiet luxury of handcrafted design.
