The Taisho Romance Notebook A5 is a fountain pen notebook from Teranishi Chemical Industry, the Osaka maker that has produced writing materials under the Guitar brand since 1916. Its cover is stamped in gold foil over a deep, mottled color, in the retro-modern style of the Taisho era, when Western and Japanese design sat side by side on Japanese print and packaging.

Teranishi built this notebook as a companion to its Guitar Taisho Romance ink line, and the two share a name for a reason. If you already write with those inks, this is the paper the ink maker chose to set beside them.

Inside is YU-SARI Writing Paper, the fountain pen paper developed by Nakabayashi, at 95 gsm. Ink stays up on the surface and dries quickly, with little feathering and little show-through, so both sides of a sheet remain usable. Nakabayashi and Teranishi have held a capital and business alliance since 2018 that covers joint product development, which is how an ink company came to bind a paper company's sheets. The same paper runs through the YU-SARI Fountain Pen Notebook.

The three covers are not only colors. Each pairs a gold foil pattern with a different ruling, so the color tells you what is inside. Dark Red is blank, framed by a yagasuri arrow pattern. Dark Blue is 5 mm grid, framed by a diamond lattice. Dark Green is 5 mm dot grid, framed by interlocking waves. All three hold 64 sheets and are bound with a cloth-textured spine tape.

Pair it with the Taisho Romance inks from the same maker, or browse the rest of our Japanese notebooks.

The Story of Teranishi Chemical Industry

Teranishi Chemical Industry has made writing materials in Osaka since 1916. In 1953 it released Magic Ink, the first oil-based marking pen made in Japan, and the pen is still in production more than seventy years later. The crowned Guitar mark that appears on this notebook cover is the same brand it has carried through that history.

Fountain pen ink came later. The Taisho Romance and Fujiyama Irodori lines brought the company to writers outside Japan, and the Haikara Notebook carries that work onto paper.
