Taisho Romance Dayflower Pastel Dip Pen Ink
Taisho Romance Dayflower Pastel is an opaque water-based pigment ink from Teranishi Chemical Industry, made for glass dip pens, dip pens and brushes rather than fountain pens. It is a vivid cyan blue named for tsuyukusa, the Asiatic dayflower that opens blue in the morning and is spent by afternoon, and it is the brightest blue of the eight.
Because the pigment sits on the surface of the paper instead of soaking into the fibers, the color reads the same on white, kraft and black stock. There is no shading and no sheen here, and that is the point. You get one flat, even color, and pale shades stay legible where a dye ink of the same tone would sink into the page and fade.
The eight colors make up Yumemiru Modern Girl, or Dreaming Modern Girl, a line within Teranishi’s Taisho Romance Haikara Ink series. Haikara is period slang taken from the English words high collar, used from the Meiji years onward for anything stylishly Western, and moga were the young women of 1920s Japan who cut their hair short and wore Western dress. Teranishi built the palette around what those women were looking toward, describing the colors as a longing for a distant future and colors not yet seen.
Our swatch was written with a glass dip pen on YU-SARI Fountain Pen Notebook paper. Pigment settles as the bottle stands, so shake it with the cap closed before you dip, and rinse your pen with water before the ink dries.
