RO-BIKI Myokaikou Notebook – Dot Grid

Sale price$12.00 USD

This Japanese notebook from Yamamoto Paper features a ro-biki cover paired with a playful woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the most distinctive artists of the Edo period. Set against a warm coral-red ground, Kuniyoshi’s cats feel naturally at home on a surface that softens and deepens with use.

The cover reproduces a print from Sono mama jiguchi: Neko no kaiko gojūsan hiki (其まま地口 猫飼好五十三疋), a humorous woodblock print series created around 1842. A devoted cat lover who kept dozens of cats in his studio, Kuniyoshi reimagined the fifty-three post towns of the Tōkaidō highway as cats in lively, expressive poses. Each image turns the name of a station into a visual pun, and the series remains one of the most charming examples of Edo-period comic printmaking.

The ro-biki (蝋引き) technique gives the cover its distinctive character. Wax is worked into the paper by hand, creating a lightly textured surface with gentle water resistance that continues to change through everyday use. As the paper creases and softens over time, the printed image gains depth and presence rather than remaining perfectly fixed. The myōkaikō (妙海紅) colorway takes its name from a traditional Edo-period hue, a warm coral red with subtle depth, used here as the backdrop for Kuniyoshi’s cats.

Sized at 3.5" × 4.9" (8.8 × 12.5 cm), the notebook slips easily into a coat pocket or bag, making it something you naturally carry with you. Inside, 60 pages of 65 gsm Soliste paper offer a smooth, fountain pen-friendly writing surface with minimal feathering or bleed-through. The fine dot grid layout provides gentle structure while leaving plenty of freedom for notes, sketches, and quiet observations.

Yamamoto Paper — Preserving the Joy of Paper for the Future

Based in Sakai, Osaka, Yamamoto Paper was founded in 1972 as a paper specialist. Drawing on decades of experience connecting paper manufacturers with end users, they now design and produce their own original stationery. At the heart of their work is a belief in “sharing the joy and warmth of paper with confidence for generations to come.”

Rather than simply selling beautiful paper, Yamamoto Paper values delivering the full character of each sheet—its writing feel, texture, and the way it changes over time. They are also known as “custodians” of paper culture, reviving legendary papers that have gone out of production and passing them on to the next generation.

What makes Yamamoto Paper especially beloved is their balance of craftsmanship and playfulness. Their Paper Tasting series, for example, lets you sample different types of paper as if you were tasting wine, turning the exploration of paper into a delightful experience. It’s this combination of uncompromising quality and creative spirit that has earned them loyal fans among stationery lovers and fountain pen enthusiasts around the world.
