Red Pine Wood Art & Craft Sheets with Hinoki Strings
A favorite among our watercolor and craft community, the Red Pine Wood Loose Leaf Paper inspired requests for longer sheets — so here it is.
The Red Pine Wood Art & Craft Sheets are made from ultra-thinly shaved wood, known as "Kyogi" (経木) in Japan. Cut longer than our standard Loose Leaf Paper, each sheet offers more surface for creative work, with a natural grain that holds watercolor and ink with a warmth unique to wood.
Kyogi has been used in Japan for over a thousand years — originally for writing, and later for wrapping food and crafting everyday objects. Its flexibility and fine texture make it well-suited for collage, mixed media, and handmade wrapping, where the grain itself becomes part of the design.
Because it is made from 100% wood, inks may behave differently than on paper. Some pigments absorb softly into the grain; others may spread along it. Both results have their own character, and experimenting is part of the process.
Each pack includes 20 sheets and 10 Hinoki (Japanese cypress) strings. As with all natural materials, individual sheets may vary slightly in grain and tone.

Coexistence with the Forest of Shiki Bun
In the Ina Valley, located in Nagano Prefecture in Japan, a company called Yamatowa supports coexistence with forests. Once, people were closely involved with forests and received many blessings from them. However, as lifestyles changed and forests were left untended, overgrown and dark forests increased. Untrimmed branches and leaves block sunlight, damaging the health and ecosystem of the forest.

Yamatowa believes that although it's difficult to return to the old ways of living, it's possible to bring living closer to forests again and increase the number of healthy and bright forests that are well-maintained, as in the past. They think that using Japanese wood appropriately in daily life will lead to forest conservation, and with this in mind, they launched a brand called Shiki.

To realize their vision, they use Akamatsu pine from the Ina Valley, and skilled woodworkers create products including notebooks and other wooden products.
