Handcrafted Sugihara Washi Paper Pen Case – White

Sale price$59.00 USD

This elegant white pen case combines timeless Japanese craftsmanship with practical design, holding approximately 12 standard ballpoint pens with ease. Handcrafted in Taka, Hyogo, it uses two of the region’s celebrated materials: Sugihara washi and Banshu-ori fabric.

The outer body is made from Sugihara washi, a hand-made paper with a history of more than 1,000 years. Unlike common pulp-based papers, it is created from 100% natural plant fibers and carefully produced in the area’s pristine river waters. Despite its natural origin, Sugihara washi is known for its beautiful whiteness, subtle patterns, and warm, soft texture.

The inner lining is crafted from Banshu-ori, a yarn-dyed fabric with over 200 years of tradition. For this design, the fabric is woven with threads dyed in a deep purple, giving the inside a rich, striking color that contrasts beautifully with the pure white exterior. Known for its vibrant hues, exceptional durability, and refined softness, Banshu-ori has also been supplied to world-class fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and DAKS.

Details such as the handle and logo tag are made with locally sourced deer leather, obtained through wildlife management in Taka, giving new purpose to natural resources while supporting sustainability.

Each case has also undergone durability testing. While the surface may become damp if exposed to water, the moisture does not penetrate inside. However, please note that the washi’s water repellency is limited, so we recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to moisture to ensure the piece remains beautiful for years to come.

Perfect for stationery lovers who appreciate Japanese tradition, this pen case offers a unique balance of elegance, practicality, and cultural heritage—an item that brings the quiet story of washi and weaving into your daily desk life.

Paper Stationery Crafted with Washi and Weaving

HALOP was founded by Daichi Tachibana, a former bag and wallet craftsman who relocated to Taka, Hyogo to bring the region’s materials and skills into everyday life. Born in Shikokuchuo, Ehime, often called Japan’s paper capital, Tachibana carries a natural sensitivity to fibers and finish. HALOP pairs hand-made Sugihara washi paper with Banshu-ori (textile) to create quiet, well-made tools that serve the needs of modern paper stationery and writing instruments. The guiding idea is to know your way back and gain options, honoring tradition while offering another texture you can choose for daily use.

Sugihara washi has been handed down in Taka for centuries, supported by the area’s clear water. Made by hand from long natural fibers, it has a gentle whiteness and supple strength. Combined with the region’s yarn-dyed Banshu-ori, the pieces balance lightness with calm durability. As pen trays and pen cases, they place the story of the materials softly on your desk.

Practical use comes first. Thoughtful interlinings and precise stitching add structure, while a thin coating of konnyaku (konjac) starch lends pleasant firmness without losing the soft touch of paper. Select accents of locally sourced deer leather from wildlife management help the work use resources responsibly. In 2024 the line was recognized by the Hyogo Five Star program, reflecting the value of this regional craft initiative.
