Chinkin Hawk Echizen Lacquered Fountain Pen
FREE SHIPPING
Grace and power meet under a moonlit sky. The Chinkin Hawk and Moon Echizen Lacquered Japanese Fountain Pen captures a dramatic moment — a hawk soaring through silver-lined clouds beneath the glow of a golden moon — rendered entirely by hand in the time-honored chinkin technique.
The pen begins with a carefully selected wooden barrel, chosen for its natural feel and perfect balance. It is then coated in multiple layers of Echizen urushi lacquer, a traditional Japanese finish known for its deep, mirror-like gloss and resilience.
Once the lacquer is complete, a skilled artisan begins the chinkin process — engraving the hawk, moon, and clouds into the lacquered surface with fine precision. These engraved lines are then filled with precious gold and silver powders, bringing a shimmering contrast between light and shadow.
The hawk, a symbol of strength and keen vision in Japanese culture, is brought to life by the hand of Sagiri Matsubara, a rising star in Japanese decorative arts. Her delicate yet powerful rendering turns this Japanese fountain pen into a dynamic piece of collectible art.
Whether writing or on display, the Chinkin Hawk and Moon offers not just a pen, but a statement — of tradition, mastery, and timeless beauty.

Sagiri Matsubara: Crafting Premium Japanese Fountain Pen
Sagiri Matsubara is a contemporary Japanese artist specializing in chinkin, a traditional technique of carving lacquerware and inlaying designs with gold or silver. Born in 1995 in Fukui City, she began her apprenticeship in 2016 under master craftsman Katsu Yamamoto.
Her work blends classical skill with modern aesthetics. She creates fountain pens, tableware, and other lacquerware that reflect both precision and grace. Each piece reveals her deep respect for tradition, while offering a fresh, contemporary sensibility.
In 2020, she received the Special Jury Prize at the National Lacquerware Exhibition. As a young artist pushing the boundaries of chinkin, her creations are already treasured—and their value will only continue to grow.
