CANOPUS Notebook – A5

Sale price$30.00 USD

A Japanese notebook born from the quiet brilliance of Japanese papermaking.

At Komorebi Stationery, we believe that a truly good notebook does more than record—it inspires. That is why we were deeply moved by Yamamoto Paper’s Canopus, a paper created through years of research, testing, and an unwavering devotion to the art of writing.

When the legendary Cosmo Air Light was discontinued, fountain pen lovers around the world were left searching for its successor. Refusing to compromise, Yamamoto Paper spent three years developing a new paper worthy of that legacy. The result was Canopus—a soft, micro-coated, high-bulk paper designed to express every nuance of ink shading and the shimmering beauty of color inks.

Named after Canopus, the second-brightest star in the night sky and a symbol of peace and longevity in Japan, this paper reflects the same spirit: a light that continues to shine quietly, even through change.

With its 73 gsm weight, Canopus offers the luxurious thickness of 150 gsm coated stock while remaining surprisingly light. Each page welcomes your favorite fountain pen, delivering smooth ink flow without feathering or bleed-through. The tactile softness invites you to slow down, listen to the sound of your pen, and enjoy every moment of writing.

The notebook’s section-sewn binding allows it to open flat to 180 degrees or fold completely back, ensuring long-lasting durability even with daily use. Subtly rounded corners prevent damage, and a guide sheet (6 mm grid / 12 mm lined) is included to support both structure and creative freedom.

We selected this notebook not simply for its specifications, but for its soul—the way it transforms ink into emotion. Whether you journal, sketch, or plan, the Canopus Notebook will remind you why writing by hand still matters.

Yamamoto Paper — Preserving the Joy of Paper for the Future

Based in Sakai, Osaka, Yamamoto Paper was founded in 1972 as a paper specialist. Drawing on decades of experience connecting paper manufacturers with end users, they now design and produce their own original stationery. At the heart of their work is a belief in “sharing the joy and warmth of paper with confidence for generations to come.”

Rather than simply selling beautiful paper, Yamamoto Paper values delivering the full character of each sheet—its writing feel, texture, and the way it changes over time. They are also known as “custodians” of paper culture, reviving legendary papers that have gone out of production and passing them on to the next generation.

What makes Yamamoto Paper especially beloved is their balance of craftsmanship and playfulness. Their Paper Tasting series, for example, lets you sample different types of paper as if you were tasting wine, turning the exploration of paper into a delightful experience. It’s this combination of uncompromising quality and creative spirit that has earned them loyal fans among stationery lovers and fountain pen enthusiasts around the world.

2 Week Review - Canopus Note is Excellent

"I suspected this notebook would start to grow on me. I'm nearly halfway through the pages and the more I use it the more I want to use it. Because I like to draw AND write in my notebooks, I appreciate how well Rapidograph pens work alongside fountain pens. If you go directly from onion skin to this, the drag is a bit noticeable. That feedback however gives you a confidence inspiring feeling of control as the line "holds" stays predictable and doesn't slip away from you. Both are excellent, they just have different use cases. I find myself reaching for this notebook over and over, largely because the price-point is also very approachable, so less "range-anxiety". No worries of running out and then needing to justify the purchase of another in so short a time. This is a really great notebook! I highly recommend it."

Good Notebook

"Coming from The Onion Skin Journal, I was looking for something equally smooth, that made writing an experience much like gliding across the page. This holds the color well and drawing with a rapidograph is excellent, but writing with my fountain pen feels like pushing through heavy snow. This can be good if you like that control and stability. I was looking for something more slippery. The quality of the notebook is high. It feels solid. I enjoy using it quite a bit and I suspect it will grow on me in ways I don’t yet know. Maybe a comparison to onion skin isn’t fair? I thought a Lamy Bold nib would fly across the page but it feels almost like my cartridge is low and the pen is starting to run dry. Better than Leuchtturm1917, not as buttery as The Onion Skin. Trying the Nanami Standard Tomoe River next to see if I can find something almost like Onion Skin but with a little less translucence. Very good product suffering only slightly from being different than expected. Respect to the company and the store. Clearly it is well made."
