Akashiya Bamboo Brush Holder Roll is a traditional Japanese brush wrap (筆巻 / fudemaki) for protecting brush tips while drying or transporting, hand-woven from bamboo strips by Akashiya, the Nara brushmaker founded in 1716. The mat works the same way as a sushi rolling mat: lay your wet brushes on the open mat, roll it up, and tie it closed with the included cord.
This is the standard tool for any sumi-e or calligraphy artist with more than one or two brushes. After cleaning, brushes need air-flow to dry without warping or molding, but stacking them in a drawer or putting them in a tube can crush the bristles. The bamboo roll lets the brushes air-dry between the rods while keeping the tips safe from anything pressing against them.
Three options. Beige is the largest at 11.8" × 11.8" (30 cm × 30 cm): thicker round bamboo strips in natural color with a plain white binding, the closest to the traditional makisu used in Japanese kitchens. Blue and Red are slightly smaller at 11.4" × 11.4" (29 cm × 29 cm), with finer bamboo strips and a decorative white checkered weave pattern, for painters who want the tool to look as considered as the brushes inside.
Akashiya has been making brushes in Nara since 1716, and this brush roll is the basic care accessory they recommend alongside their own brushes. Pair it with the Weasel Hair Menso or Tsuketate brushes from the same maker for a complete portable kit, or use it to organize the slim barrels of the Sai watercolor brush pen series.
How to Use
- Place clean, wet brushes parallel along the unrolled mat, evenly spaced so the bristles do not touch each other.
- Roll the mat from one end, keeping the brushes inside.
- Tie with the included cord.
- Let the rolled mat dry standing or laying flat; the bamboo lets air circulate around the bristles while the wrap keeps anything from pressing against the tips.

The Story of Akashiya
Akashiya was founded in 1716 in Nara, the city where Japanese brushmaking has been practiced for over a thousand years and which remains the country's main center for handmade fude (writing brushes). The workshop spent its first two centuries making traditional calligraphy and painting brushes (bristle bundled, glued, and shaped by a single artisan from start to finish), and that one-brush-one-maker discipline is still the standard for every piece in the line today.
Over the past century Akashiya has extended that craft into adjacent territory: the Sai brush pen series, fountain-pen-style brush pens with their own ink reservoirs, watercolor brush pens in traditional Japanese color sets, sumi-e and nihonga brushes for fine detail and broad strokes, and even makeup brushes. The common thread across all of them is the way the tip holds and releases ink, which is the part of brushmaking that takes the longest to learn and is hardest to mechanize.
What you are holding is a small piece of a 300-year continuous practice, made in the place where Japan's brush tradition began.
