Genuine urushi hardens with humidity rather than drying like paint, and it turns more translucent with handling, so the figure of the wood surfaces more clearly the longer you carry it. In Brown, the barrel wears clear raw urushi and shows the wood's own color. The tinted versions are translucent colored urushi (iro-urushi) named for the nature of Fukui: arakon, the deep indigo of a winter sea; nezuzora, an overcast grey; shinryoku, a deep green; and benisabi, a rusted red.

Keyaki, or Japanese zelkova, is a hard, heavy hardwood in the elm family, long used for temple beams, chests, and the bodies of taiko drums. Its name, hoshizukiyo, describes a night so full of stars that it seems lit by the moon.

Kara-nuri is the best-known Tsugaru-nuri technique, and done in the traditional way it runs to around 48 steps. Raised speckles are built up on the barrel, buried under coat after coat of lacquer, and then sanded back so the layers surface as a mottled pattern. Here the speckles come through in gold-colored urushi against deep black. The artisan told us gold is rarely used for kara-nuri, and the gold layer was the slowest part of the work to cure.

None of this can be hurried. Urushi does not dry like paint. It hardens slowly in a humid cabinet, so each coat has to cure before the next one can go on. For a batch of these pens, the artisan asks for about three months.

Because the pattern only appears when the surface is sanded, its exact shape cannot be planned. Fresh from the workshop, our sample pen had a faint yellow tint. After about two weeks under gentle UV light, kept out of direct sunlight, the yellow had gone and the pink had become a clean, bright pastel. Depending on how recently your pen was finished, it may still carry a little of that warmth, and it will clear the same way with time. Watching that change is part of the pleasure of owning urushi.
